Part Time Jobs for Students: 4 questions to ask yourself before you say yes to more money

To all tertiary students out there, I’m sure at one point of time (especially when your timetable for the new semester felt pretty empty) you had asked yourself this question: To work part time, or not to work part time?

Even the superheroes are holding part time jobs, so why shouldn’t you start looking for some part time jobs in Singapore?

But before you jump onto the bandwagon and start googling for part time jobs Singapore, there’s a few questions you should ask yourself first. 

1. What type of work do you enjoy?

Well, it might be just a part time job that takes up at most just 4 hours of your time a day for that few days per week. But still, finding a part time job doing things that you enjoy doing will give you loads of happiness and fulfillment on top of a fatter wallet, so why not be a chooser?

Be it telemarketer, home tutor, service crew, or even a uber/grabcar driver, just take your time and think it though. If you were to spend 4 hours of your day doing something consecutively, what would you rather do?

2. What hours can you work?

Can you afford to throw in a few hours of work before or after classes on your weekdays? Or would you want to ‘burn’ your weekends and say no to social life once and for all? The type of hours you can afford to work greatly determine what kind of jobs you can take up, so start looking at your class schedule and start planning!

3. How much money do you need?

Well, are you looking to kill time due to an exceptionally free class schedule this semester or you’re actually cash strapped?

A F&B service crew probably earns you barely $10 an hour while being a home tutor can easily fetch you 3 times that hourly pay, along with more stress and responsibilities.

Decide on exactly how much money do you need (not want) and then put in just that amount of effort to earn enough. Remember, you’re a student taking a part time job, not a full time salaried worker taking part time studies.

4. What are your priorities?

As mentioned in point 3, you’re a student taking a part time job, not a full time salaried worker taking part time studies. You always have time for things you put first, so set your priorities right. This is coming from my own experience, so do not take this with just a pinch of salt (take at least two, lah!). When I was in my 3rd year in university, I was blinded by the amount of cash I was getting from my part time job, so much so that I compromised on my studies just to chalk up that few extra hours a week to earn more. Needless to say, my results took a huge hit. Semester GPA of less than 1, have you heard of that before?

As a student, your top priorities should always be your studies. You may compromise on your social life for more cash, and that’s the limit.

Never, ever, allow your part time job to affect your studies.

Mia's Review: Tips for Oily Skin from Dermagold [Advertorial]

Botanical Acne Gel - $42

 The botanical acne gel is for local spot treatment of acne and can be used as an overnight treatment. It is also good as a prevention for acne prone and oily skin.

The gel may feel a little thick but spreads rather well and leaves a tingling sensation on the skin, probably due to its alcohol content. Scent wise, it has a pretty strong herbal smell, which may not be the most well-received kind of scent for something we put on our faces, but it's still acceptable and goes away after a while. 

I prefer using this in the day together with the Miracle C+, under my make up, on my T-zone to prolong the time of having my face oil-free under the hot sun. 

As its efficacy is pretty strong, I'll highly recommend that you ladies do not be greedy with its application, nor use it on your entire face, hoping to be shine-free the entire day. If you're skin is not oily enough, you might just end up with extremely dry (peeling) skin. So do be careful with the amount you dab onto your face, or perhaps, use it every other day/night.

Five Simple Tips to your First Internship

Every tertiary student in Singapore should get at least an internship before they graduate and it’s really not about fulfilling your academic unit requirements in order to graduate or letting employers exploit you as free labour to just do tasks nobody else in the company wishes to do.

As a fresh graduate, there is nothing substantial for your potential employers to gauge if you’re worth the ‘hassle’ of hiring and training. Well, face it. As fresh graduates you’re more of a liability than an asset in (at least) the first few months of your employment, so all the more the employers would want to see as much Singapore internship experiences on your CV as possible, as compared to the numbers of As and Bs stated in your degree audit.

And so, here are my five humble tips in making the best out of your internship Singapore!

1. Clean up your resume and tailor your cover letter

Yes, it’s just a 3 months internship, but you wouldn’t gain anything if you didn’t even land yourself the position of an intern, right?

Always remember to keep your CV short and sweet, bringing your potential employer straight to the point that you wishes for them to focus on, be it how well you’ve aced the structures module (and you’re applying to a structural designing firm) or how you’ve managed to lead your CCA club to kickstart the annual event with a resounding bang, just make sure you’re selling yourself in the correct direction to which the company is looking for.

Likewise for your cover letter. Do not ever skip the cover letter as it’s the first thing that the hiring manager will look at while going through your application. A well written cover letter, tailored to the actual jobscope, leaves a good impression and heighten your chances of getting the internship while one laced with grammatical and spelling errors might send your resume directly into the bin.

2. Don’t get tunnel vision when applying – It’s all about the experiences.

Aim for the big names as it adds more wow factor to your CV when you apply for your first permanent job?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it doesn’t always go this way. Employers are smarter than that now and I’ve heard enough from my own potential employers themselves during interviews, saying that one actually learns more in smaller (one man does all) firms.

It’s really what you did during the internship that matters, not the company name you went under for that few months.

3. Don’t expect to get an internship from your dream company, always.

Don’t let the replies of rejections (or worse, no replies at all) get you down. You really do not need to intern at that big company, just because they’re well known for good employee welfare and amazingly comfortable office.

Let me regurgitate the fact now, it’s all about the experiences gained while you’re there. And to a certain extent, just for internships itself, focusing on quantity might really do you some good too, for not every firms treat their interns the same way. You might end up learning zero here, and gain a hundred at your next internship programme, who knows!

4. Bring Your "A" Game to the Interview

It’s an interview for an internship, but you still got to fight hard for it. Be sure to turn up on time (or rather, slightly early), dressed formally, and well prepared for a good ‘chit-chat’ session with the hiring manager. Other than a possible discussion of your grades (I was once asked why I didn’t do as well in a particular module, and was expected to explain and justify why), do expect the hiring manager to ask questions that are ‘deeper’, such as:

 

What do you want to do with your life?

Why are you interested in this profession/major?

What do you bring to the table in terms of skill sets?

What makes you different or special?

 

In other words, be prepared to convince them that you are THE INTERN they absolutely have to hire!

5. Enjoy the experience!

It sound so simple but is not easy to achieve. No matter what comes your way, keep all your positivity close by you and embrace the challenges with an open mind and a ‘can-do’ attitude. Bear this in mind, it’s all the experiences of your internships in Singapore that counts.
